Berne, 26 January 2022 – The Fassmer company together with their partner MEYER Group has received the order to build a research ship for the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The two well-known German specialist shipyards combine their know-how: The customer was convinced by Fassmer’s experience in the design and manufacture of special purpose vessels for various authorities and ministries and MEYER Group’s knowledge resulting from the construction of the deep-see research vessel SONNE.
The ship has a length of around 125 meters and a size of approximately 10,000 GT. In addition to 35 scientists, the new build offers space on board for 36 nautical and technical crew members.
The METEOR IV is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research, with a focus on the Atlantic. The new vessel will make an important contribution to national and international marine research, particularly in the areas of climate and environmental research.
"We are very happy that we will build this advanced research ship together with the MEYER Group. The intensive negotiations with the customer were a strong team effort and we are now looking forward to working with MEYER," says Harald Fassmer, managing director of Fassmer.
The research vessel METEOR IV is scheduled for delivery in 2026 and will replace the existing METEOR and the POSEIDON, which has already been decommissioned.
